Farming

Agriculture encompasses both crop cultivation and livestock rearing practices. While Joluo engage in agricultural activities, they typically do so on a smaller scale. In Dholuo, crop farming is referred to as "pur" and livestock rearing is known as "pith." The term for crops is "cham," while cattle are called "jamni." This reflects the cultural significance of these practices within Joluo community, where traditional methods of farming and animal husbandry persist alongside modern techniques.

In Dholuo, a farm is referred to as "puodho," and a farmer is called "japur" if the farmer engages in crop farming or "japith" if the farmer rears livestock. Seed is known as “kodhi
